Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral that forms when manganese-rich hydrothermal fluids deposit successive layers of mineral within fractures and cavities. These changing conditions produce the characteristic pink banding for which rhodochrosite is known, while darker manganese oxide minerals often formed alongside it, creating the dramatic natural contrasts seen in many specimens.
