A striking split and polished ammonite fossil pair from Indonesia, featuring creamy white mineralization, numerous tiny crystal-lined chambers, and a completely different appearance under ultraviolet light.
The polished interior reveals the ammonite's characteristic spiral structure in soft white and pale blush tones surrounded by contrasting reddish-brown matrix. Along the outer whorl, many of the individual chambers remain partially open and are lined with tiny sparkling crystals, giving the pair considerably more texture than a fully solid mineral-filled specimen.
Both halves are fluorescent and phosphorescent. Under UV light, the mineralized portions fluoresce predominantly yellow with areas of red, illuminating the spiral and individual chamber walls. After the UV light is removed, the pair produces a visible primarily green phosphorescent afterglow with some red response. Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods related to modern squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish. Their chambered shells produced the distinctive spiral cross-section visible when specimens such as this one are cut and polished.
This specimen retains areas of its natural reddish-brown matrix around the fossil rather than having the entire exterior carved away. The centers of both halves are naturally open, and the specimen shows the irregularities, fractures, mineral-filled areas, and variations expected in a genuine fossil.
