A one-of-a-kind curated natural history collection combining zoological specimens, fossils, minerals, and an impressive entomological display. With eight distinct pieces ranging from an ancient fossil fish to a modern mammal skull, this collection offers an eclectic cross-section of the natural world.
A soft A-grade opossum fur forms the backdrop of the collection. This specimen does not include the tail, but retains the beautifully varied gray, cream, and dark coloration characteristic of the species. It is paired with a red fox skull top, cleaned and whitened to highlight the delicate structure and elongated form of the skull.
The collection's standout entomological specimen is a five-horned rhinoceros beetle (Eupatorus gracilicornis), displayed upright beneath a glass dome on a cork base. Its extraordinary horn structure and substantial size make it an immediately striking cabinet piece even among the larger specimens in the collection.
Two fossils represent very different chapters of prehistoric life. A Knightia fossil fish from the Green River Formationis presented in a floating display frame, allowing the delicate fish fossil and surrounding matrix to remain fully visible. A fossil tiger shark tooth is housed separately in a protective specimen case.
An Indonesian ammonite half has been cut and polished to expose the internal chambers of the fossilized shell. Several chambers contain small crystalline pockets, adding texture and sparkle to the exposed cross-section. Indonesian ammonites are UV-reactive, showing tones or yellow or red under UV light.
Mineralogy is represented by two contrasting specimens. A polished Malawi agate displays warm orange, red, and smoky translucent banding and comes mounted on its labeled acrylic display base. The protective cover on the bottom of the acrylic base can be removed, and the specimen is attached via museum putty. A substantial chunk of Missouri-mined druzy quartz is covered in densely packed crystals with soft cream-to-peach coloration and larger crystal formations emerging from the matrix.
Together, these eight specimens create a collection with particularly strong display presence, combining fur, bone, insect, fossils and crystalline material in a range of forms and textures.
