A curated collection of six fossil and geological specimens spanning ancient seas, forests, and terrestrial environments, assembled as a compact introduction to the natural history preserved within stone.
The collection includes a partial megalodon tooth, a polished ammonite half, a fossil horse tooth, a slice of petrified wood, a St. Clair fossil plant specimen, and an enhydro agate containing ancient water trapped within the stone. Together, the specimens represent dramatically different organisms, environments, and processes of fossilization and mineral formation.
The partial megalodon tooth comes from Otodus megalodon, the enormous extinct shark that inhabited the world's oceans for millions of years. Although incomplete, these substantial tooth fragments retain the unmistakable form and scale of one of prehistory's most recognizable predators.
The polished ammonite half reveals the internal chambers of an extinct marine cephalopod, while the fossil horse tooth represents Equus, the genus containing modern horses, zebras, and donkeys. A slice of petrified wood preserves the structure of ancient wood after its original organic material was gradually replaced by minerals.
Also included is a St. Clair fossil plant from Pennsylvania. These distinctive fossils preserve Carboniferous plant material in dark shale, often appearing silvery or pale against the nearly black matrix, and date to approximately 300 million years ago.
Completing the collection is an enhydro agate. Although not itself a fossil, enhydro agates are geological time capsules containing water sealed within cavities in the stone. Movement of the trapped water can be detected by watching an internal gas bubble shift as the specimen is tilted. Some bubbles may be visible under ordinary lighting, but most are best viewed by holding the agate in front of a small flashlight or other bright light source. Each collection is arranged in a kraft presentation box with protective paper fill and includes an informational card identifying and describing the specimens.
Because fossils and minerals are natural materials, every collection will vary. The photographs and video are representative examples. You will receive the same types of specimens listed below, but their exact size, shape, coloration, preservation, patterning, and other natural characteristics will differ from those pictured.
