A dramatic matched pair of agatized fossil coral, cut from a single specimen to reveal a striking interior of black, white, smoky gray, and deep blue-gray agate.

These two halves measure approximately 3" and 2.9" and preserve complementary patterns across the pair. The palette is unusually monochromatic: pools of nearly black agate wind through bright white formations and soft gray banding, creating an almost inverted, photographic quality. Look closely and the pattern becomes increasingly complex, with tiny fortification-like bands, translucent areas, irregular pockets, and delicate dendritic-looking markings throughout.

Both halves open into three-dimensional cavities lined with botryoidal formations. The rounded, bubble-like surfaces contrast beautifully with the smooth polished agate surrounding them, while portions of the original rough exterior have been intentionally retained.

Under UV light, portions of the specimen fluoresce, revealing another layer of pattern and detail that is subdued or invisible under ordinary lighting.

Because these pieces were cut from the same original specimen, they form a natural matched pair and are offered together.

Agatized coral forms when mineral-rich groundwater gradually replaces the original skeletal material of ancient coral with silica, preserving aspects of its structure while creating entirely new mineral patterns within. The result is a specimen that bridges paleontology and mineralogy, an ancient biological structure transformed into agate over geologic time.

Natural cavities, pits, fractures, irregular edges, and areas of rough matrix are inherent to this specimen and have been retained as part of its character.
