A striking split ammonite from Madagascar, cut and polished to reveal an unusually complex interior shaped not only by the original shell, but by the fossilization process that followed.

Measuring approximately 5.3" × 4.5", this matched pair displays rich amber-brown coloration contrasted by pale crystalline chambers and dark gray-green mineral and sediment infill. Unlike specimens with uniformly preserved chamber structures, portions of this ammonite are irregular and disrupted, creating a beautifully organic interior with fragmented septa, distorted chamber boundaries, and areas where mineral deposits have replaced or obscured the original structure.

Numerous chambers contain pale crystalline material, while several remain partially open with small druzy-lined cavities visible across the polished faces. The innermost whorls are particularly distinctive, preserving a complex mixture of fossil shell, mineralization, and sediment rather than a perfectly symmetrical spiral.

Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods whose coiled shells were divided into individual chambers by walls called septa. After burial, those chambers could become filled with sediment and minerals, preserving the shell while simultaneously altering its internal structure over millions of years. In this specimen, that process is especially visible, making the fossilization itself part of the display.

The two halves originate from the same ammonite and fit together to recreate the original fossil shell. Their polished interiors reveal two closely related but subtly different cross-sections through the specimen, while the reverse retains the natural exterior fossil surface.
